This week, record by Chi-town vocalist, Lil Randy, “Mama I Made It” is rising meteorically. For the better part of 2019, Lil Randy was a buzzing singer/rapper out of Chicago. While he’s had quite a few well known songs like “Get Yourself Together” and “Free D-Boy Campaign,” no release has come close to garnering the same level of attention as “Mama I Made it.” Released on January 1st, the song is an uplifting remake of R. Kelly’s famed “World’s Greatest.”

Randy is confident in proclaiming his long journey to success. Despite having an incarcerated brother, among other traumatic circumstances, Randy proudly advises “kept my feet up on the pedal when they doubted me/ don’t ever let ‘em tell you what you can’t achieve/ tell they ass to save it/ look mama I made it!” Looking to the future, Randy stresses the importance of having a plan and watching out for his friends.

In under two weeks, the “Mama I Made It” music video has an impressive 450k views on YouTube. Captured by legendary Midwest cameraman, Rickee Arts, the visual perfectly expresses the life transition that Lil Randy sings about. The video opens with news footage detailing Memorial Weekend 2019, when 43 people were shot in Chicago. The coverage also discusses Lil Randy’s arrest for waving a gun around at a past music video shoot. The “Mama I Made It” music video features no guns, and instead highlights Randy’s tightly knit community. One particularly aptly shot scene features a group of about twenty children singing, dancing, and walking along with Lil Randy while he gives a young girl a piggyback ride. “Mama I Made It” is one of the most inspiring demonstrations of Chicago’s rich pool of talent.
