Dropping on the cusp of the holiday season is “You’re The Sweetest Thing” by Santa Ana jazz quintet, Apollo Bebop, off their album Cuffing Season II.

In an alluring mix of electric guitar, chirping birds and charismatic drums, the song welcomes you to hop on a path of honeyed words and warm promises.

Singer-producer-songwriter, Brian to Earth, hooks us on his adoration for a new lover who’s restored his faith in a wholesome love.

“It always felt like love came with conditions and stipulations.” Past traumas can push people to do things they would otherwise not do if they were not hurt before. He mentions gaslighting and manipulation as things that have made him weary of opening up to love again.

For someone to enter Brian’s life in a way that makes him lower his guard, they have to be pretty special. He says “but then you made your debut / you blew me away too.”

It is not enough to speak with words confirming assurances, it is our actions which show our true intentions. In the second verse, he mentions that he would not be doing all this for his lover if they didn’t show they’d do the same for him.

Production on this track compliments the essence of the lyrics. An unembellished yet effective bass line walks us through Brian’s words of admiration while a mellow sax compliments each chorus.

Their album continues to bring me all sorts of joy. I hope to see more of Apollo Bebop shine in the new year.
