Hobart-born, Melbourne-based indie dance group Close Counters recently released their 2021 EP FLUX. FLUX is their first long project since SOULACOASTA, their 2018 debut album. Unlike other indie-dance acts, Close Counters features a 7-piece setup for live performances, including percussion, woodwind, string instruments, and dancers.

FLUX opens with an old-school house track titled “SOMETHING IN MY DRINK,” featuring angelic vocals from R&B artist JAYDEAN. “SOMETHING IN MY DRINK” sets the tone for the entire EP: a funky, upbeat house project perfect for any occasion. With JAYDEAN’s spotless timbre and groovy layering from Close Counters, it is impossible not to vibe when listening to “SOMETHING IN MY DRINK.”

Slowing it down for their second track, “SPEAK IN TRUTH” features singer and creative Allysha Joy for a proper R&B anthem. Joy’s soulful vocals complement the strong 808s and smooth synths from Close Counters.

The third track on FLUX is titled “UP AND OUT” and takes on a more experimental house sound. With a futuristic intro and addictive drop, “UP AND OUT”  blesses listeners with 4 minutes and 26 seconds of raw house grooves. Nothing short of a banger for easy listening or getting hype.

They close out their EP with “FEEL IT!,” a bass-heavy track with a true old-school sound. “FEEL IT!” takes listeners to Chicago’s underground house scene of the 80s with a style nothing short of nostalgic. “FEEL IT!” is a perfect finale to FLUX as Close Counters pays homage to the history of the genre.

Close Counters can be discovered on Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Basement and New Music Friday playlists for endless funky vibes and groovy house.
