Father Koi knows how to write a damn good song. The New York singer-songwriter/producer (born Kara Lu) started turning heads with last year’s Late Afternoon National Anthem, a debut album that showcased her skills for making nostalgically-tinged indie rock. But for her newest single, “Dreamgirl,” Lu has switched gears from her 60s folk revivalism to a full blown studio pop sound.

Self-produced with Sev Archer, “Dreamgirl” is absolute ear candy. The song kicks off with a repeated vocal pluck before Lu starts singing with dreamy auto-tune, telling an abstracted story of chasing romance. She then builds up to this absolutely infectious synth melody that will weasel its way into your cranium for an indefinite amount of time. It’s very effective.

Father Koi seems to be exploring various avenues of pop songwriting. I’d love to see her continue down this EDM/electro-pop path while experimenting over different types of production, but am excited regardless for whatever she comes up with next.
