Malcolm Meets his Maker in “Monster”

Steven Malcolm is not here to play games. The Michigan/Florida-raised singer warns us that his inner demons are not too far from the surface on “Monster.”

With striking synthetic bass lines and ferociously delivered lyricism, Malcolm talks to us about life before he found faith. In the line, “Crooked my ways until He came,” he reveals that God’s message was humbly received.

In this heart pounding single, “Monster,” he collabs with the U.K.-based trio, LZ7, for the first time. The fusion of edm and poetic yet hard-hitting verses are a match made in musical heaven, driving home the memo for others to take a deeper look within themselves.

“Sticks n stones break my bones but it will cost ya/ They can't cancel what God planned when He's called ya.” Karma may not be real to some, but Malcolm cannot ignore His power.. Malcolm wants us to know that he will not be led astray, no matter what he encounters along the way.

In each soul-stirring chorus, Malcolm prepares us for a glimpse of his true colors:it is an internal battle tearing away at his exterior layers. He wishes to be free of this “monster”, as if doing so will offer the space he needs to find peace within himself.

“Don't try to lie to me / What be inside be haunting and wicked.” Malcolm knows exactly what that monster is capable of, and has done the work to bury him deep inside. At this point in time, he is ready to be rid of it as it takes away from who he can truly be on the outside.

In a quicker verse, the genre-bender counts upward to sleepless nights. Again, a precaution in relation to letting his demons out. Malcolm knows that, in his unconsciousness, he will be left open for the demon to sneak back into his persona. He will have to stay awake for this fight.

Talking about your inner evil desires is never easy, knowing you’ve put a part of yourself away that’s done you no good is just the beginning of the journey. Keeping it prisoner? Good luck.

“Monster” is produced by Jimmy James and Dayme.
