Nothing Like Summer in the City with Public Library Commute
Jersey native, Conrad Hsiang, more widely known as Public Library Commute drives towards warmer days on his long-awaited EP, “1000 Summers.” Over the span of 6 tracks, the rising singer-songwriter captures summertime magic, drawing much inspiration from California’s golden charms.
Pulling from notable influences that range from Kanye West to King Krule to Hawaiian folk music, Public Library Commute curates a tracklist uniquely attuned to himself. He fills each lyric with nostalgia and weaves a masterful work that showcases his musical prowess. “25 mph,” a stunningly vibrant intro, sets the EP in motion. The next track, “Summertime,” is a slow groove, highlighting his vocal versatility. The record reminds me a bit of Surfaces, a popular duo that Public Library Commute has written for previously, in addition to other famous names such as Healy and khai dreams.
Shifting gears, Public Library Commute revs up with “City Love,” which features a more upbeat drum kick rhythm. With a hint of the nonchalant, lo-fi hyphy sound prevalent in the bay area, the track moves the tropics into the city. The fourth track on the EP, “You’ve Been on My Mind,” is an airy tune, perfect for anyone who’s got the love-bug.
Personally, “Moonlight” remains one of my favorites, and rightfully so- it’s the one that caught the attention of Indie-Pop Junkies and even earned him a spot on one of Spotify’s most widely known playlists, Lorem. The EP closes with the titular track, “1000 Summers,” a relaxed, yet enchanting melody, a fitting conclusion to a soothing collection.
Fully encapsulating his passion for music, “1000 Summers” confirms Public Library Commute’s potential as a breakout star. The carefree and uplifting nature of his music provides an alluring dose of warmth- a charming testament to his ability. With a bright future up ahead, Public Library Commute is well on his way towards a long lasting career.
