Los Angeles based Mexican-American pop artist, Kordelya, blends classic percussion and brass with new wave beats to create a vibrant sound on her new single “Torero.” The two worlds collide in the best way possible on “Torero,” creating a sound reminiscent of the past yet ready to take on the future.

The pop sensation toggles between English and Spanish, a common theme in rising Latin pop stars like Kali Uchis, Cuco, and Jessie Reyez. This artistic choice bridges a gap and entices listeners to tune in whether or not they know the language in its entirety.

Torero ( translation: “bullfighter”) is about a toxic relationship in which one sees the red flags and continues to pursue. Kordelya briefly explains the meaning behind the song on an Instagram post saying, “Toxic relationships have always been fascinating to me. They always seem so perfect when they start out that sometimes we are blind to the red flags just to feel loved again.”

The red flag used in bullfighting is called a “tercio de muerte” or “third of death”, which she says is the “Perfect metaphor for this. By the time you realize what you've gotten yourself into, it’s the third act and you can’t seem to find a way out”

In the “Torero” visualizer, Kordelya is adorned in a beautiful matador-esque outfit, draped with roses. Though the visual is elegant, Kordelya can be seen bleeding from thorns of the roses, signifying the pain and beauty that accompany every relationship.
