NYC-based artist, FIG, gives us a sweet taste of her style in her single “Raspberry Tongue.” With her 2019 single “Don’t Watch Me Cry” reaching over 1.5 million streams on Spotify, listeners can latch on to varying emotions. Her more recent work is playful and carefree, accompanying colorful animations for cover art.

“Raspberry Tongue,” produced by Huck, starts with the classic indie guitar chords we all love. The hook is inevitably catchy, “raspberry got your tongue, hope it doesn’t last too long, I’ll make this one out to you.” The beginning instrumental is fairly minimal, allowing us to focus on the creative flow of FIG’s vocals. Her lyrics are sung with a relaxed swing but also rhythmically aligned with the instrumental phrases perfectly. When the bridge approaches, there’s a switch in production. The guitar is swapped for a repeating synth. This change makes the ending feel reflective and expansive. The same hook is used, but this time it feels slower and even more nostalgic than before. The record ends with a few heavy beats and a snap, the perfect initiator for listening to the song on repeat.

FIG also recently released a music video for the single that illustrates the song’s sentiments perfectly. It shifts between fisheye lens shots of the artist in her apartment and an animated immersion into an alternate universe made up of raspberries and other fun objects, including corn (which she loves).

FIG’s sound is reminiscent of summer and simpler times. Her music demonstrates her contagious and immaculate energy.
