INTERVIEW: Katzù Oso Talks Horror Movies and “Amor Extraño” Music Video Concept

Katzù Oso is an indie-pop artist from Montebello, California with music full of nostalgia and dreaminess that can get you through a tough day. Oso’s latest release “Amor Extraño” is a perfect representation of his aesthetic and sound for first-time listeners.

From the music video to the instrumental, this single does Oso’s nostalgic style justice. The music offers a slice of paradise while talking about the pain of losing a partner. It sounds like Oso could be talking about the loss of the honeymoon phase that comes with every relationship after a certain point. As Oso’s vocals come in it feels like there is a lot of uncertainty for the future, but the bright and easygoing tone in the instrumental offers a sense of reassurance.

Sparky was able to chat with Katzú Oso who gave some insight on his Montebello getaway and the concept for “Amor Extraño.”

-

Sparky: How would you describe your sound?

Katzù Oso: I like to make what I'm feeling at the moment and my sound reflects that - I try not to constrain myself when creating these days like ranging from something with a little more pop to a love song.

-

Sparky: Being born and raised in Los Angeles, what is your go-to spot to relax in the city of Montebello?

Katzù Oso: There’s a secret park in Montebello on Howard Hill that I like to take my acoustic guitar to play. In Los Angeles, I’ve gotten pretty attached to Mariachi Plaza and like going to Capuyo Café to grab a coffee down the street. I love Boyle Heights and wanted to showcase the city in my new video for “Amor Extraño.”

-

Sparky: What lead to the concept for the “Amor Extraño” music video?

Katzù Oso: The concept came about when I was hanging out with my tías while they were watching novelas and thinking I could make a modern song that could fit that novela drama. The video gives me Pulp Fiction vibes mixed with the world of Narcos with a dramatic Rosa de Guadalupe twist.

-

Sparky: “Amor Extraño” feels bright almost like a vacation or an escape, if you had the chance to vacation anywhere you’d want, where would you go?

Katzù Oso: I would love to work and vacation in Paris, France. I’ve always thought of the french language as very romantic and I would like to experience that fully. Something about the language and city of love feels very inspiring.

-

Sparky: Favorite horror film and scene?

Katzù Oso: The Exorcist (1973) - the scene where he records the exorcist with the girl, then listens to the playback later and she’s speaking in Latin. I actually tried to do this in the studio but it’s a lot harder than it seems haha.

-

Sparky: First venue you hope to perform at in Los Angeles after the pandemic?

Katzù Oso: I’ve always wanted to perform at the El Rey Theatre - I was scheduled to play with The Rapture right when the pandemic hit but sadly it was canceled.

-

Sparky: Would you rather listen to one album or only watch one movie for the rest of your life, and what would it be?

Katzù Oso: I would watch a movie because I could listen to the music for the rest of my life, I would have to pick Saturday Night Fever just for the soundtrack.

-

Sparky: If you could see music as colors, how would you see your music?

Katzù Oso: Purples and Pinks, literally pastel colors, and tones.

-

Sparky: Any plans music-wise for the rest of the year?

Katzù Oso: I plan to drop as much music as I possibly can and have a few projects lined up.
