Making noise in the hyperpop scene, the young and talented Jay Kim is not to be overlooked. Dropping his highly anticipated single “Complicated”, the track is a melodic mood swing, resonating with the sound space of hyperpop and expressive Gen Z’s.

First gaining attention through Tik Tok, Kim’s videos garnered over 40-50k views where he would tease snippets of the demo. Leaking fans the main hook “You left me no motherfucking option / I swear to god if you don’t stop fucking calling me”, the track had much appeal and periodically took shape of it’s own as one of his most hyped songs on his discography.

Situated over iconic electric guitar riffs and heavy 808s, “Complicated” is a self explanatory track exploring the battles of emotions and relationships. Layered with synths and metallic snares, Jay Kim’s vocals bring out his aggrievance where his lyrics explore the mental tribulations of his past relationships. With a cover that fits the theme of this song (designed by Wixxir), “Complicated” is just one example of Kim’s use of artistry and his abilities to engage listeners through sentiments and sympathy.

With a song like “Complicated” becoming a fan favorite through the simplicity of posting a track on Tik Tok, I believe Kim’s music will continue to find a way to relate and connect with the Gen Z audience. Tik Tok has undoubtedly been one of the best platforms to gain success, and Kim’s brand and sound were truly what gravitated his audience to be invested and excited for the artist’s music. Looking forward to seeing what Jay Kim has in store for us, he’s one to most definitely keep your eye on.
