King of Cordele

There is much more to Georgia hip hop than the Atlanta rap scene. Atlanta’s royal status in music often outshines other intriguing scenes in the South. In surrounding Georgia cities, there are burgeoning musical ecosystems with their own stars and styles. Lil Bread is the undisputed top dog in the city of Cordele. Last March, he dropped his debut project, entitled Hood SupaStar

The 5 song EP opens with a gun cock, which just about sets the mood for the following songs. The intro to the project is a fan favorite and totals two minutes and twenty seconds of raging lyrical wrath. As it is his first project, the introductory track serves as listeners’ first time meeting Bread. As for first impressions? Bread seems full of street wisdom, and slow to trust an outsider. He preaches a low profile, rapping “I know you don’t want to go to school/ just stay down and get your diploma.” He favors humility and self sufficiency over flash.

In fact, everything about Lil Bread is lowkey, and that’s a good thing. His instagram profile is stealth and he’s only dropped a few videos. Despite his understated presence, there is a decided interest in his music as his views quietly climb. Much of his progress thus far has been propelled by the creative team, BeeRoll. They shot the video for his song Freestyle and are a great support system for artists in Georgia.

I’m looking forward to more releases from Bread in 2020. His latest drop, “No Debate,” came in late January and was a solid follow up to his debut project. It’s inspiring to see a rapper from a small community putting on for them in such a big way. I would highly recommend everyone check out “Follow Da Leader.”
