Witty, distinct, and entertaining are just a handful of ways to describe Malcolm. (yes, the period is in the name) new EP I Think I’m Ok. Originally from Prince Geoge, British Columbia, Malcolm. over the last couple of years has started to pull away from the masses as a rising star in the Canadian indie scene. With his overall style mismatched from his childhood classic rock car rides with his dad, to modern day influences like Harry Styles and Miguel, Malcolm. has been carving out his own unique sound.

I Think I’m Ok is Malcolm.’s return to a full release since his 2020 album Vibey Rock. and it did not disappoint. Each song on the album produces its own sound with unique instrumentation. The opening track “3am” sets the mood with a minimal production track highlighted with thick layered percussion instruments and features a kazoo solo at the end (super cool!). The opening single perfectly depicts the overall mood of the EP through Malcolm.’s lyricism, “Wait, why the hell/ Am I in this place again/ I thought I would be with friends/ Now I’m lost at 3am.”

Followed up by the lead off single, “Closure”, Malcolm. shifts the production on its head transitioning to a synth-orientated indie-pop hit. Immediately you’re hooked into the song by Malcolm.’s vocals with his somber lyricism clashing with his upbeat production, and then prompts you to sing along with his catchy chorus, “What the f**k did I do?”. Earlier this year I interviewed Malcolm. about the lead single and loved the way he described the track in our interview, “I had one of those nights where I couldn’t sleep because of something that happened back when I was fifteen. Not anything traumatic, just a relationship that ended out of nowhere that’s always left me confused.” Get to know him in our one-on-one interview here.

The next track “Jeff Goldblum” is one of my favorite’s off the EP for fans of Tame Impala and Rex Orange County, this track is the perfect blend of those artists. The chorus sweeps you off your feet with the funk fused guitar and bass lines wanting you to bust a move on the dance floor. A beautifully written track that needs to be added to your “Saturday night fever” party playlist.

As best described by Malcolm., “Most of the lyrics on I Think I’m Ok will find me complaining about life in an amusing way.” Malcolm. is ready to showcase the new EP over the summer with five shows in Calgary, catch him at one of his shows!
