Serge Alex caught my attention last year with his single “MUST BE NICE Pt.2” since he’s released two more singles one being “If I Played Guitar…” his latest. This new single is a stripped-down piano ballad, with a deep and dramatic production and vocals. There is a lot of emotion held within this track and you can hear it in the tone of Serge’s voice. Inspired by artists such as Olivia Rodrigo and Renee Rapp, Serge Alex brings a Black perspective into the predominantly white genre of alt-pop.

The juxtaposition of a piano ballad entitled “If I Played the Guitar…” brings emphasis to the fact that Serge does in fact not play the guitar. The archetype of this song is fascinated by someone else who does play guitar, this prompts Serge to lay out his insecurities on the song in response to his jealousy. Serge is asking if the person he’s interested in would like him more if he played guitar among other things, comparing himself to someone else that’s piqued their interest. The track is quick but holds great storytelling value. From start to finish, Serge shared his situation with us and truly opened up.

Many of Serge Alex’s songs are inspired by his current experiences, scenarios, and emotions he’s dealing with. One of Serge’s strengths is transparency in his lyrics, allowing himself to reveal what he’s going through in-depth gives a chance for listeners to resonate with him and feel comfort from his music. I’m excited to see where Serge Alex will go next, he’s had a strong run of singles and I’d love to see him go in the direction of an EP! Check out “If I Played Guitar…” and keep up with Serge to see what’s next!
