ELLES & Seq. Outgrowing The Old, Ready For The New

ELLES and Seq. have teamed up to showcase the difficulties of outgrowing your peers and flourishing into the person you strive to be. “Resonate” perfectly depicts the different emotions one can feel when you’ve outgrown a relationship: “I used to love these days / But now I'm in a different place / Reflecting we don't resonate.”  ELLES takes a nostalgic but sorrowful approach to this by reflecting on previous events that she used to love; however, because of her personal growth, she has realized that they do not resonate with her anymore. She wishes she hasn’t changed so that she could still be friends with people that she has known for a long time.

Seq. takes an angrier, more disheartened approach to this song. “You wanted comfort and I wanted change / It's probably best if we go separate ways / I know what you're thinking, this isn't a phase / It's pissing me off I've got all these delays,”,no one likes the feeling of having someone holding you back. Seq. is fed up with his peers that chose comfort instead of change, which essentially hinders Seq.’s growth. Let this be a life lesson: ultimately, the people you chose to be around will influence how you do things. If your friends aren’t passionate about anything, or have no goals in general, odds are that you will be like them. Seq. explains it perfectly and realizes that this relationship is no longer beneficial for him. They don’t resonate anymore.

ELLES and Seq. perfectly complement each other sonically. ELLES’ vocals immediately caught my ear. A slow approach to indicate her sad, melancholic feelings about this relationship, and her vocals for the hook completely resonated with me. Seq.’s verse contrasts ELLES' verse incredibly. Seq. has a faster approach to his verse which makes you feel the anger and frustration that he has from these relationships. His verse gives me Post Malone vibes which I absolutely love.

The production for “Resonate” also resonated with me as well. The infectious guitar melody is simply elegant, that followed with the hard hitting bass and drums makes the song even more memorable. “Resonate” was produced by Seq. showcasing his ability to produce a captivating instrumental that speaks to you.

The accompanying music video is cinematically accurate to the song. Director Jake Stendel of 8 Bit Motion did an excellent job of capturing these two artists in their element. The video starts off very calm, just like the song, in an interesting 4:3 ratio. Then, when the drop happens, it goes back into a wider aspect ratio which I think is amazing. The video also features a cool blurring effect that showcases their frustration very beautifully. Lastly, the lighting and colour grading of the video are absolute perfection.

I’m super excited to see what is next for these two talented artists. ELLES has an indie rock track coming out in March, and Seq. is releasing another song soon too!  Be on the look for these two rising Toronto artists.
