Penny Roox Knows How to Make a “Mean” Debut Single
Penny Roox, an emerging 24-year-old artist from the Netherlands, has released her debut single “Mean.” On this impressive first track from Roox, we get our first taste of her rich voice and distinctive jazz-inspired sound. Some artists are known for their instrumentals or lyricism, but then there are those known for their voice alone. It seems to me that Roox will be of the latter.
“Mean” begins with a unique bass riff, then swiftly transitions into a soft collection of guitars. The song halts, breaking into a traditional soft-jazz rhythm, similar to something one would hear Amy Winehouse or Duffy singing over. And like these two, Roox captivates with a voice full of soul and range. In “Mean,” she sings about deceitful, apathetic, and well, mean guys who she can’t help but find herself attracted to. Singing in the chorus,
“I only like him when he’s mean, only calls me when he needs me. No love notes or lullabies, I won’t pick up if you’re that guy.”
Her vocals help carry the theme of the song, highlighting her certain kind of lovesickness with the sounds of her sonorous voice.
“Mean” is an impressive debut single and points to lots of future potential for Roox. Her voice has the potential to carry her to great lengths, and I’m eager to see where her music goes from here.
