With the rising popularity of indie music, the spotlight is starting to turn onto Vancouver native: EKKSTACY. Stacy is 18-years-old and is stirring the pot in the underground music industry. With success from his early 2021 track, i walk this earth all by myself which surpassed ten million views on Spotify, it is clear Stacy has found his sound. Stacy sings with a mellow tone over his heavily keyboard-oriented beats which establish a connection with his lyrics through the gloomy sound. His subtle approach to singing conveys recurring themes of uselessness and loneliness in his new EP: “NEGATIVE” which reads like a melancholic poem.

Stacy’s soothing cadence on “then i met her” allows for listeners to connect with him on a personal level. Stacy touches upon how he is slipping into a depressive state and is finally able to find happiness through his one true love with the lyrics: “Nothing makes me happy/but when you knock on my door, I smile” (13-15). “then i met her” resonates with viewers who have experienced life-changing relationships and is one of the more optimistic songs on Stacy’s debut EP. There is evident pain in Stacy’s voice and it is even apparent in his disheveled physical appearance.

One noticeable aspect of the visualizer is that Stacy purposefully refuses to show his face. Stacy seems to use his dreadlocks as an escape and a way to hide his pain in his music video. In an interview with Complex, Stacy explains that “I am not the most confident person. But it’s more how I look and that type of thing. Not my music.” Moreover, throughout the video he sways and stumbles around the outside of an abandoned house, possibly alluding to the fact that he previously felt abandoned until he “met her” in connection with the song title.

Stacy’s music doesn’t fit into a distinct category and for that reason, he will prevail in the industry. The underground scene needs someone like Stacy, who shows listeners that it’s okay to be uncomfortable in your body and that you have to embrace it. He is ready to shake the game up through his diverse styles. His songs show the presence of indie influence, but there are also signs of post-punk, alternative styles, and even lo-fi. Clearly, Stacy has the talent it takes to exceed to the next level, but does he have the perseverance and determination it takes to achieve success?
