What Does Baby B’s "Fool For You" Mean?

Before listening to Baby B’s sophomore album, I questioned what the term “Fool For You” really meant. As we get started, I’d like to introduce you to Baby B. Hailing from West Palm Beach in Florida, Baby B is making noise thanks to her mesmerizing voice. All of her life, Baby B’s been known as a lovebird. She was raised by her grandmother who she loves most of all and grew up with two siblings. Baby B is Haitian-American and takes inspiration from God, Justin Beiber, Brian McKnight, Blackstreet, and Mario.

There are many talented upcoming artists in today’s industry, however, to say Baby B is “talented” is an understatement. Heck, I’d say her sound is comparable to her inspiration, J-Beebs. Not in the aspect of them actually sounding alike, but her vibrant tone, versatile delivery, and perfect pitch reminds me of Bieber during his prime. And with that being said, this is only the start of Baby B’s journey. With a mixture of determination and perseverance, there is no doubt in my mind that Baby B will make it to superstar status

R&B has never really been my taste. Although I enjoy the occasional likings of Brent Faiyaz, 6lack, and Bryson Tiller, it’s unlikely that you’ll find any of them in my daily track rotation. Baby B on the other hand suits my needs as an R&B artist and I genuinely believe that I can listen to her tracks around the clock.

My favorite tune on Fool For You undoubtedly is: “What We Had.” Baby B touches on a past relationship where she ponders about all the relationship-related struggles she endured on a daily basis. The toxicity kept her embodied in the relationship and she felt as though there was no way out. Baby B shouts, “I believed in what we had/ I made room for you/ Tried to love had to let go/ Even though it hurt I was holding on/ Did me wrong and you never said sorry.” However, with all the negative components of the relationships, there are positives that she looks back on while reminiscing in her lyrics. She announces, “You was the one,” but, explains that she wasn’t ready for a relationship which is why it had to end.

Fool For You brings me back to 8th grade where I learned about the five stages of grief after a breakup: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The project starts out with “Find You” where Baby B is pre-relationship and touches upon jealousy. In “On One”, the second track of the album, Baby B is tied into a relationship and harmonizes the highs of her significant other. Next up comes, “Belong Here”. The first half highlights a healthy relationship, however, subsequently, the lows come into play. Baby B utters phrases like, “You be all in my head/ I apologize if you don’t want to be here.”

“What We Had” starts the cycle of grief post-breakup. Baby B chants, “What we had was unforgettable” in disbelief and denial that her relationship was over. In “Right Back” she is flat out angry that her ex would always say that she would leave and always say that she’d come “right back” even though she wouldn’t. The one portion of the album where the stages don't completely correlate is in the track, “Fool For You.” Bargaining after a break-up is when you are willing to do whatever it takes to get back with your partner. Needless to say, in this track Baby B claims, “I’m on to new and better things now” and overall summarizes how she’s over her ex and is excited about new opportunities.

Themes of depression are prevalent in “If It Ain’t Me Then Who.” Baby B ponders, “Why don't you see/ What you meant to me/ I was supposed to be the one who showed you finer things.” It’s obvious that her attitude jumps once again from happiness to sorrow. It conceptualizes what it would be like to get back with an Ex. The final tune, “X Rated” sums up her relationship perfectly and Baby B shares her experience accepting the break-up and thinking about someone new: “I was doubting my impression/ Didn’t think so much reflection/ But at the end for strength he said take me to your place.”
