Let's talk about old school hip hop and rap, but let’s talk about it in Spanish.

Old school hip hop legends like Biggie Smalls, Mos Def and A Tribe Called Quest, have inspired the world of music, culture and style. Their flow direct, simple with  no beat drop attempting to explode the dancefloor or lead listeners away from their message. Poetry behind a simple track politically influenced and driven by truth is what resonated with the world. Although the world of hip hop and rap has evolved beyond the original founders there are still artists using their techniques and style. Today MC’s like Sofía Gabanna from Argentina are using this classic style to set their foot in the world of hip hop.

Sofía Gabanna, 22 years old has a classic rap  flow and is leaving all other MC’s in the dust. Her music takes references from jazz, flamenco and blends it beautifully with classic hip hop. Her style mimics the flow of MC’s from the 90’s, while rapping about contemporary issues plaguing her as a woman in Latin America.

Sofía often works with Lupita’s Friends, a hip hop, rap and trap production team based in Spain. The two producers Marcelus Roke and Pasto Martí create beats and environments for their collaborating MC’s to speak their political truths. Although Sofía’s tracks aren’t always about the failing political systems in Latin America or her experience as a woman, her style remains consistent throughout all her work.

This style of rap has never left the influences of the contemporary music world but appears to be resurging in the Latin world, why?

The beauty of classic hip hop and rap is its history and the value of its founders to society. Its origins were rooted in anger towards systems and governments that refused to protect and value the lives of its people. Artists like Sofia Gabanna, mimic the styles of the past to resurface the feelings and sentiments associated with listening to the original. Those feelings of anger and frustration still exist in the world and latin MC’s are taking a stand through their music.

Artists like Sofía Gabanna, are being influenced by the artists before them. The feelings associated with her work transcend generations. Sofía’s tracks like Bounce, #RapSinCorte L, Bee-Bé, Mi Lucha make you feel like the 90’s baby you wished you were.

Women are taking over the world of MC’s  and giving men a run for their money and  Sofía Gabanna is leading them.
