If you’re a fan of Lana del Rey’s haunting vocals and cinematic instrumentation, you won’t want to miss Edie Yvonne’s latest release, “Stain.” The 14-year-old LA-based singer-songwriter made waves with her appearance in Chloë Sevigny’s directorial debut, “Kitty” at the Cannes Film Festival; however, when you listen to her music, you’ll hear her influence reaches far beyond film. “Stain” is Yvonne’s most personal drop yet. As someone who has a vascular birthmark, Yvonne has spent a lot of time thinking about her physical difference and how it affects the way others look at her. In her own words in an interview with Pop Passion: “I hope to shine a light on inclusivity and self love through art and activism over the course of my life.”

The track features an addicting mix of sweeping strings, dramatic piano, and raucous rock guitar—not unlike Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever.” Yvonne starts the song with gentle, dream-like melodies before gradually increasing in intensity and eventually launching into a melodic rage where she shifts into fiery self-possession. The haunting, soul-stirring introduction sets up the brashy chorus and consequential verses with a sense of foreboding as she describes, “Walking into a room/Your glance of doom.” The song was inspired by one of Yvonne’s experiences dealing with strangers staring at her because of her birthmark, and we can see it reflected in the lyrics.

Yvonne continues to weave her sonic web by chanting the line “Don’t hide, don’t hide” throughout the track; her habit of sliding between notes in a glissando is a motif throughout the song that adds to its hypnotic quality. The sudden drop into indie-rock as Yvonne reaches self-actualisation is jarring, but in the best way possible. She gives us a taste of her range as she belts “The stain on my body/Is straining my heart” with the same barely-repressed grit that characterises some of the best female rock stars (Courtney Love, anyone?)—something that’s crazy to think about when you remember that she’s only 14 years old. A firecracker with infinite tricks up her sleeve, Edie Yvonne is definitely someone to keep an eye on.
