R&B is Not Dead

Diddy, I want a full apology for when you said that “R&B is dead.” It is clearly not. The Toronto native Quincy Griffith takes on a new perspective to R&B, honing in on a new true-to-self style and his traditional roots. Quincy provides an experience with his newest single “Just Who We Are.” He has taken the ability to reclaim the classic 90’s R&B sound along the likes of Toronto R&B superstar DVSN with his newest singles. If you haven’t already listened to this track, go do so right now.

The track is backed by his compelling lyricism, as well minimal production with just piano, synthesizers, and drums. Quincy really pulls on the heartstrings in his pre-chorus, “Show me your open, and girl I can break down your walls.” Quincy soulfully sings about a previous relationship, and both partners needing to be more open with each other. As Quincy describes the track, “I really wanted to tell this person, ‘I will be there for you through the worst.’” My personal favorite part of Quincy’s track is his vocals.

Quincy’s voice cuts like butter, it is so smooth. He also has a ridiculous vocal range that helps to elevate his track to a new level. It might take you a couple listens, but when you hear his harmonies you will melt in your seat. The track can go above and beyond for someone outside of his original meaning. Quincy told me, “I hope people find their own meaning or personal story behind this track, just like I did.” Overall, the production has its own story with its range in dynamics and melody. Quincy’s masterful build up to his chorus in “Just Who We Are” with synthesizers helps show the tension and the building of trust between one another.

This is Quincy's sophomore single of his career, following “Overtime.” The young Toronto star is beginning to elevate his career to the next level with his first two singles. “Overtime” has its similarities to “Just Who We Are,” but Quincy has already shown his range and his versatility with his two singles. In my recent discussion with Quincy he told me, “I am ready for that next leap in my career. Lots of new things are coming soon including live performances and more music!”

In a year's time, be ready to group Quincy in with some of the rising R&B stars like Chase Shakur, Secily, and JON VINYL. If you haven’t heard of Quincy Griffith, now is the time to hop on the bandwagon.
