Shane Garcia, a 24-year-old singer/songwriter from New York, released a new single last month that manages to transform the mundane act of running to the store into a rich, soulful composition. “Corner Store Runs” once again reveals the powerful and silky qualities of Garcia’s voice.

The song begins with a raw guitar riff accompanied by a slow bass. Garcia's rich vocals soon take over the track. “Corner Store Runs” builds on a smoky and ominous tone (despite her singing about a task as simple as stopping in at the corner store) by harping on the drama of Garcia’s voice and the guitar. Her whispered ad-libs reinforce the alluring quality of her voice, something that reminds me a lot of Madison Beer’s style of music.

The lyrics of the song reflect much of what we’ve been living through this past year. “Finally left my house today” is a milestone that I’m sure a lot of us can attest to. A while back, a run to the corner store was something we wouldn’t think twice about, but now, leaving your house for nearly anything can be deemed a notable event.

Garcia has been releasing music since her 2018 debut single “Strange,” and since then has released just under 10 other singles. Though still relatively small, her discography showcases her immensely talented vocals. Her voice echoes with style reminiscent of SZA and artists alike. I look forward to seeing Garcia’s future progress and encourage listeners to keep an eye out for more to come.
